CONTINUING EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Greetings and Welcome to our Website!
The mission of the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) is to promote health, safety, and well being in the workplace and the community. We support this mission by providing graduate-level academic training and continuing education, by conducting and supporting critical research, and by serving professionals, government, business and the general community.
Continuing Education must keep abreast of the demands of the frequently changing training and informational demands of occupational and environmental health and safety professionals. SWCOEH’s CE program is, at present, undergoing some rather dramatic but exciting transformations and is up grading to better serve and anticipate the needs of the professionals and the public of Region VI (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas).
We sincerely appreciate your patience and consideration as we redevelop curriculum and course offerings for professionals; create certificate programming, online courses and outreach events; and become an active provider of occupational and environmental health and safety data to our region. If you are unable to access the information you desire, please e-mail us at SWCOEH.CE@uth.tmc.edu. We’ll do whatever we can to assist you as quickly as possible.
STAY PREPARED
While every health professional faces a challenge to keep up with the latest scientific information, the work of occupational and environmental health professionals is affected by some of the most fundamental global forces shaping people's lives today-science, politics, law, economics and culture. From defining the nature of the newest risks to refining the best approach to the oldest ones, we know that your task does not have neat boundaries, and is never finished.
The Continuing Education Program at the SWCOEH has been providing focused, high-quality courses addressing occupational and environmental health issues for more than 20 years. Targeting the needs of occupational health and safety professionals, medical professionals involved in employee health, and a variety of professionals in allied health, govenment and business, our courses, seminars and conferences represent a continuing source of the knowledge and training needed to reduce both the risk and the impact of occupational and environmental health threats in the region and the world. With a diverse and respected faculty, a keen eye on important emerging issues, and an ambitious commitment to serve, we're helping you stay prepared to manage today's problems in the workplace and the community more effectively, and to anticipate tomorrow's.
MEET YOUR NEED TO KNOW
As the educational outreach arm of the SWCOEH, the Continuing Education Program leverages the Center's extensive academic and research resources and deep commitment to education, research and service. Through our collaborations with NIOSH, WHO, PAHO, the Fogarty International Center, the Texas Medical Center and leading professional societies, we provide a comprehensive curriculum covering a wide range of topics that target the most important needs to today's occupational health and safety professional-from refresher courses to certification to emerging issues. And we continually adjust our offerings based on needs assessments, course evaluations, request from the community, our advisory committees, and collaboration with local groups and organizations.
LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS
Drawing on the expertise of the SWCOEH's faculty, the University of Texas School of Public Health, the Texas Medical Center and the entire region, the Continuing Education Program locates the right experts to cover each topic. Faculty members are selected from academic, business and government settings to address specific course objectives. Our offerings employ proven adult-learning principles, and use a variety of formats, including lectures, demonstrations, small group discussions, distance learning techniques and practical, hands-on exercises. Courses are held at locations throughout Federal Region VI, from New Orleans to Santa Fe, and from Oklahoma City to the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
