Occupational Injury Prevention Research
Doctoral Training Program

The training program is a partnership between The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health (UT) and the University of Houston, College of Psychology an Department of Industrial Engineering.

THE TRAINING PROGRAM:keyboard

  • Provides doctoral students in the UTHSC School of Public Health an integrated education in occupational injury epidemiology, safety  engineering, and occpuational health psychology
  • Builds competencies in conducting 'integrative research' to identify and prevent occupational injuries

NIOSH traineeships paying tuition and monthly stipends are available to students on a competitive basis.  Requirements include acceptance into the program, maintenance of a minimum course workload, and satisfactory prograss assessed in a year-end evaluation.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The School of Public Health requires:

  • $30.00 Application fee
  • Documentation of earned prior Baccalaureate or more advanced degree from a regionally accredited institution (The UTSPH prefers a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale)
  • Scores from Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last five years
  • Scores from Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) taken within the last two years for applicants from countries where English is not the native language
  • Two recent and original letters of reference on official letterhead
  • Official transcripts for all course work completed
  • Written statement of career goals
  • For the DrPH program, prior MPH degree or equivalent preparation from an accredited university or school
  • For the PhD program, prior Master's or more advanced degree in an appropriate field of study from an accredited university or school

In addition to the School of Public Health requriements, training program applicants must have a Master's degree in one of the following areas:

  • Industrial/organizational psychology
  • Human factors psychology
  • Industrial engineering
  • Occupational health
  • Epidemilogy

Additional weight will be given to relevant work experience and demonstration of previous research experience.  Students with unique or unusual backgrounds (e.g., a Master's in economics, medical sociology or health psychology) wil be considered on a case-by-case basis.
