Occupational Epidemiology Doctoral Training Program

Epidemiology is the basic science of public health; therefore by extension, occupational epidemiology is the basic science of occupational health. Occupational epidemiologists are an important component in the spectrum of occupational health professionals.
Occupational epidemiologists are commonly employed in government, academia, large corporate settings, or as private consultants. In these capacities, they provide key scientific information, such as the assessment of health risks from occupational exposures, disease outbreaks investigations, and data to support the scientific basis for regulation and control of chemical and physical agents in the workplace. Increasingly, occupational epidemiologists are being asked to extend their reach to the community to address public health concerns possibly arising from exposure from occupational exposures..
The major epidemiology research focus of the SWCOEH falls into four broad areas: work organization epidemiology, injury epidemiology (including intervention and prevention), cancer epidemiology and occupational and environmental respiratory diseases. In turn, these epidemiologic research areas relate to the National Occupational Research Agenda in the following priority areas: Disease and Injury; Environment and Workforce; and Research Tools and Approaches.
NIOSH traineeships paying tuition and monthly stipends are available to all students on a competitive basis. Requirements include acceptance inot the program, maintenance of a minimum course workload, and satisfactory progress assessed in a year-end evaluation.
