Degree Programs - International Applicants

It is important for international applicants to be aware of the application deadlines and to understand the admission requirements. Early submission of an application and the required documents is strongly encouraged due to the length of time required for evaluation of international academic credentials. Please note that any application missing a document by the application deadline date will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Below are the 2 additional documents that must be provided along with the materials needed to satisfy the general requirements.

TOEFL

All international applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum acceptable score of 565 on paper-based TOEFL, 225 on computer-based TOEFL, or 86 on internet-based TOEFL is required for admission to our school. Test scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Our institution code is 5988. No department code is needed.

Exception to this requirement:

  1. If you are a Permanent Resident of the United States or an international applicant who holds a baccalaureate or higher degree from a U.S. institution, you are not required to submit the TOEFL;
  2. If English was the medium of instruction in your foreign school, then, you may request a TOEFL waiver by indicating on the application form and emailing the SPH Office of Student Affairs at Mary.A.Smith@uth.tmc.edu. An official document from your institution must be provided indicating English as the language of instruction.

Transcript Evaluation

All applicants with foreign credentials must acquire 2 sets of official documents* from each institution where degree was obtained. One set is sent to the credential agency (ECE or WES) for evaluation. The other set is mailed directly to SOPHAS.

UTSPH will only accept evaluations from either of the two agencies listed below.

*Official means either original or copy of the marksheets/transcripts/certificates sent directly in a sealed university envelope to the Registar's Office by the foreign institution/s. A notarized copy is not considered official.

Exception to this requirement:

You may request a credential evaluation waiver if you meet any of the following provisions:

  1. hold a baccalaureate or a higher degree from an accredited U.S. institution;
  2. currently certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG);
  3. passed all 3 steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
  4. If a waiver is granted, make sure to submit Official transcrips.  These are required to evaluate your application.

All evaluation waiver requests along with a scanned copy of the ECFMG certificate must be sent to Dr. Mary Ann Smith, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, at Mary.A.Smith@uth.tmc.edu for approval.
