New Student Orientation

All new degree seeking students are required to attend the orientation program conducted at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, as well as, the new student information sessions scheduled during the first week of school (see below).  The program is held at the UT School of Public Health, 1200 Herman Pressler, Houston, Texas 77030, and at Regional Campuses in  BrownsvilleDallasEl Paso, San Antonio, and Austin.   Please contact the regional campuses for more information regarding Orientation dates.

During the orientation process new students will:

  • begin building new relationships with other new students, currently enrolled students, faculty and staff
  • receive important information on courses, enrollment and registration procedures
  • become familiar with academic policies and expectations
  • meet with others in their division
  • be informed about research guidelines and safety requirements
  • receive information on the variety of resources, services and organizations provided by the school and the university in general.

7:45 a.m. Check-in/Continental Breakfast 
7:45 a.m. All Doctoral Students
9:00 a.m. Check-in/Continental Breakfast for all other students not attending the early session above 
9:00 a.m. Small groups welcome/get to know you session
9:45 a.m. Dean's Welcome
10:00 a.m. Academic Expectations (All student must attend)
11:00 a.m. Division gatherings
12:30 p.m. Lunch Meeting - New Students & Advisors
1:45 p.m. University & School Resources
2:15 p.m. Class & Registration Information
3:30 p.m.

In addition to the day of orientation, other short 'new student' information sessions (often referred to as 'Brown Bag' sessions, meaning bring your lunch and participate) have been scheduled to assist you in becoming familiar with the SPH Library and Career Services. These sessions are a required part of your orientation and are essential to your success as a public health student, so plan to attend. Both of these sessions will be held in the Auditorium of the School of Public Health.
