Career Development for San Antonio Regional Campus Students

The purpose of this page is to provide information to School of Public Health graduate students in the areas of career planning and career tracks.

Career Planning

An Internship/Practicum experience can be a great spring board toward your thesis, but it can also help you plan your career path. In an effort to create an index of local internship opportunities, we spoke to several local organizations and asked them to let us know if they could use the services of our School of Public Health Students. By clicking on the San Antonio Internship/Practicum Database, you can find the various organizations that have responded thus far. Click on the following link to learn more about the MPH Culminating Experience.

UTHSCSA has also created a Community Service Learning (CSL) Directory which may lead you to other great local practica opportunities.  Please click the following link for a detailed listing of what is currently available.  UTHSCSA Community Service Learning Directory

UTHSCSA also allows you the opportunity to join a CSL Listserv for updates on UTHSCSA CSL activities and opportunities.  If you are interested in joining the listserv, please click on the following link. Join the CSL Listserv for updates on CSL activities and opportunities

For additional information on these opportunities, please contact Melanie Stone, CSL Coordinator at stonem@uthscsa.edu, 210-567-0523.

We would like this to be a combined effort, so if you find a great internship opportunity, please contact Rosie Chavez at (210) 562-5504 so that we may investigate the possibility of offering a similar opportunity with the same organization, to future students.

For a list of national and international internship opportunities go to the Office of Public Health Practice. For additional information please contact Brenda Brown at (713) 500-9160.

PLEASE NOTE - It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that their practicum is properly documented in their academic record by ensuring that a copy of the completed Learning Contract is placed in their file prior to graduation.

If however, you have just started our program and are not quite ready to commit several hours a semester to an Internship/Practicum experience, but still want to expose your skills to local organizations, consider volunteering. Click on the San Antonio Cares - United Way link to find yourself connected to up-to-date needs within the San Antonio Community. If you would like to pick the agency you would like to work with, please click on the Browse Agencies - United Way link.

Career Track

In conjunction with the University Of Texas School Of Public Health Library, the Career Services Library provides our students with: literature on public health careers, career strategies, labor statistics, federal jobs, non-profit jobs, resume writing, interviewing skills, job search skills, minority organizations and opportunities, and information on fellowships. The Career Services Library provides internet access to help students identify world wide resources and find employment.

Career Services offers interactive opportunities to students and Alumni through monthly "Brown Bag" seminars and workshops. The seminars and workshops are conducted on campus and via ITV to regional campuses. Special guest speakers are brought in to speak on such topics as: networking, resume writing, job search techniques, fellowships and topics related to the field of Public Health. Please monitor your e-mail account (uth.tmc.edu) for announcements.
