  • Students interested in International internships can look at International Resources. Work on an international internship in IRC's Emergency, Overseas, and Domestic Programs (New York) with the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The IRC is a non-profit, non-sectarian, voluntary agency providing assistance to refugees around the world.

  • ASPH/HRSA -  Internship Opportunities (Go to "Employment and Training") for Community-based Programs, Science & Epidemiology, Service Systems, Policy & Program Development, Training & Technical Assistance, Communications & Information Dissemination, and National Nursing Workforce Unit - Nursing Education and Practice Branch. Application deadline has passed for this internship.
  • ASPH/CDC/ATSDR - Internship Opportunities are here (Go to "Employment and Training"). Funding is now available to support a number of internships at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) will be responsible for coordinating these internships. Any full- or part-time student, who is enrolled in a master's or doctoral level degree program is permitted to apply for the internships offered. Check the site for application deadlines for this internship.   
  • Association of Prevention Teaching & Research (APTR) formerly Associations of Teachers of Preventive Medicine - APTR Training Opportunities. --NEW Opportunities-- Deadlines: Ongoing -- For example, the Student Investigator Initiated Short Term Public Health Training Activities For Residents and Graduate Students Training. Research activities may be completed at the applicant's academic institution or at a CDC facility. A CDC mentor and/or faculty member's participation will offer guidance and support throughout the training experience. Funding is available. The approximate funding level per activity ranges from $20,000 to $50,000. Other training may include opportunities in health policy, statistics.  
  • California Family Health Council, Inc. - The Title X Intern Program is seeking graduate students in public health, health education and related fields to participate in intern opportunities in federally-funded family planning providers in California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. Placements are year-round but the majority of them are filled in the summer months; stipends are available. The Internship Office has catalogs of information on available internship positions.   • CSPI - The Center for Science in the Public Interest is a national consumer organization that focuses on health and nutrition issues. CSPI offers internships for a small number of qualified students in undergraduate, graduate, law, and medical schools each summer and during the school year. Type Internship in the Search Box.  
  • Congressional Budget Office (CBO),  Intern Program - Up to 28 internships in one of the eight divisions of the CBO in Washington, DC. Internships are for a period of ten weeks and interns gain valuable experience in quantitative and analytical research. You can register to be notified by e-mail when the application process is open. 
  • Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Inc. - See the Directory of National Fellowships, Internships and Scholarships for Latino Youth (and others). Application deadline is January for Summer Internships. 
  • The Cooper Institute in Dallas, TX, has internship positions in continuing education, health promotion, clinical applications, and epidemiology available for spring, summer and fall. Study opportunities include exercise testing, wellness programs, children's health, physical activity interventions, clinical trials, and health and fitness workshops. Undergraduate or graduate students are encouraged to apply. Visit their website at www.cooperinst.org for a downloadable application and for complete details. Application deadlines are January for Summer, May for Fall, and September for Spring Internships.
  • DHHS - The Department of Health and Human Services is offering a two-year career intern program, Emerging Leaders Program, beginning in July. All HHS OPDIVs will be participating in the program and offering approximately 40-50 internships throughout HHS (Master's degree qualifying for a GS-9 internship). Deadline is in April.

  • EDC - Education Development Center, Inc. is an international, non-profit organization with 325 projects dedicated to enhancing learning, promoting health, and fostering a deeper understanding of the world. Look in the About EDC section for Job Opportunities (intern). Visit the Centers section to find out more about EDC, including contact information.
  • EPA - Environmental Protection Agency - Internships, Fellowships, and Student Programs, i.e., Environmental Policy, Regulation, and Law; Environmental Management and Administration; Environmental Science; Public Relations and Communications; and Computer Programming and Development.
  • Everett Public Service Internships - About 200 summer internships at 58 organizations in New York City and Washington, DC are awarded to college students interested in public service.
  • GAO (Careers at GAO - Student Intern Program) - United States General Accounting Office - Also check the Careers at GAO Section (Current Job Openings) - GAO Student Intern position. Most positions will be filled at the headquarters office, Washington, DC, but opportunities may exist at any of the 11 field offices (i.e., Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, etc.). Salary: $1800 - 3200/month. Positions may be available at any time during the school year and in the summer. The application is on-line.
  • HACU- Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities - The National Internship Program is designed to place students in federal agencies or corporations. This program is not limited; anyone can participate in the program. See Internship Opportunities (organizations) and Become an Intern (details on internship), and Alumni (job postings) sections.
  • Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems - Go to Johnson & Johnson, Careers and click on Graduate Students and then, Internships. The Health and Fitness Division creates health and disease prevention programs that are part of the Johnson & Johnson Health Care Continuum. (Peg Mooney, National Recruiter, 732-562-7189)
  • The Kellogg Forum on Higher Education for the Public Good is sponsoring up to five awards for pre-tenured faculty, young practitioners, and advanced graduate students in any discipline in U.S. higher education institutions who engage in research that explores higher education's role in serving the public good.
  • Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) Cancer Survivorship (ongoing) Internship Program - Interns will have the opportunity to work in Austin in the cancer community in the areas of Advocacy, Grants, Public Health/Education, and/or Planning and Evaluation. Interns will have the opportunity to work directly with programs for cancer survivors, to lead projects, to evaluate programs and/or to direct research to explore ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
  • Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation (MCRF) Summer Research Internships in Marshfield, Wisconsin (i.e., Biomedical Science Internship and Epidemiology/Public Health Internship). Deadline: January. 
  • Maternal and Child Health Bureau - Graduate Student Internship Program (GSIP)- The Summer Internship Program is to enhance students' skills in data analysis and promote training in MCH epidemiology, and to provide assistance to state and local health agencies with data-related projects. The GSIP is coordinated by the Maternal and Child Health Information Resource Center (MCHIRC). Applications are available on-line and application deadline is February for Summer Internships. Some internships have an earlier proposal deadline. The internship is to be completed over a 12-week period, to begin in May, June, or July. Stipends: $5000 to be dispersed over three months to cover travel to the internship site, housing, and daily living expenses.
  • Mount Sinai School of Medicine - The Division of Environmental & Occupational Medicine of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City offers a training program for minority students. Deadline: March.
  • The National Academies - Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Internship Program is for graduate students through post-doctoral scholars in any physical, biological, or social science field or any field of engineering, medicine/health, or veterinary medicine as well as business, law, education, and other graduate and professional programs. Postdoctoral scholars should have received their PhD within the past 5 years. For the year 2004, the internship program will comprise three sessions. See Eligibility Requirements. Deadline: November 1 for the January program, March 1 for the June program, and June 1 for the September program.

  • NASA Langley Research Center - Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars Program (LARSS)
  • National Cancer Institute - Six month paid graduate internships (with possibility of a 6-month renewal) to help plan, develop, evaluate, and promote education programs and materials, including Web-based products, for the public, cancer patients and health professionals. Deadlines are April 1 for the July-December session and October 1 for the January-June session.
  • National Conference of State Legislatures - Provide research assistance on a variety of health topics (part-time during the school year, full-time during the summer).
  • National Science Foundation announces four summer programs that provide U.S. graduate students in science and engineering first-hand experience in Japanese, Korean and Taiwan research environments, an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the respective countries, and language training. Deadline: December 1.
  • Navy Acquisition Intern Program - A three-year internship with Department of the Navy. Interns get to sit in a GS-12 position at the end of the program.
  • Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and U.S. Department of Energy Professional Internship Program at Savannah River Site - Applicants (chemistry, computer sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, geology, physics) must be beginning graduate students who have not yet begun their thesis or dissertation research. Appointees are assigned independent fossil energy-related research projects that correlate with their academic and career goals. Deadlines: Feb. 15, June 1, Oct. 1.
  • Pfizer - Pfizer Global Research and Development (PGRD), aimed at providing practical work experience opportunities to university students.
  • Presidential Management Intern Program (PMI) for Master's or doctoral-level students completing their graduate degree requirements between September 1 and August 31 of the following year are eligible to be nominated by their educational institution for participation in the upcoming PMI Program. As a PMI, your assignments may involve domestic or international issues, technology, science, criminal justice, health, financial management, and many other fields in support of public service programs. PMIs receive an initial two-year appointment. PMIs are appointed at the GS-9 level (currently $43,000 range per year) and are eligible for various employment benefits (i.e., insurance, holidays, vacations, etc.) at organizations such as Department of Energy-Human Capital Management, Department of Health & Human Services, FBI.   • Summer Opportunities for Minority Undergraduate Students, some graduate level - See Index of Opportunities in the back of the document. These are the opportunities for graduate level from 2003; please go through the document in the current year, others may be added.
  • Society of Toxicology (SOT) serves as a clearinghouse for toxicology internship opportunities. Sponsors submit information about their internship positions to SOT by December 1. The cumulative listing of these internships is available from January to April each year. Application available at site.
  • The Soros Service Program for Community Health - Summer Internships. Also see Other Programs.
  • Student Conservation Association (SCA) has opportunities year-round and nationwide (12 weeks to 12 months). Get an education award of up to $4725, plus travel, housing, food expenses paid, free or low cost insurance and weekly stipends while you live and serve in national parks, forests, and refuges. Opportunities exist in wildlife management, environmental law, historic interpretation and preservation, environmental education, geology and hydrology, computer science/GIS, public policy, and much, much more. Applications are online.
  • studentjobs.gov - The Office of Personnel Management and the U.S. Department of Education website designed specifically for high school and college students who are looking for temporary employment/internship with the federal government (type Intern). It provides valuable insight into the hiring process, programs and benefits.
  • U.S. Department of State - The Department is looking for students with a broad range of majors, such as Business or Public Administration, Social Work, Economics, Information Management, Journalism, and the Biological and Physical Sciences, as well as those majors more traditionally identified with international affairs.
  • U.S. Department of State Careers - Student Internship Program. 
  • U.S. Pharmacopeia - USP Summer Internship Program, Rockville, MD. Medical, pharmacy, nursing, public health, and international health students in the final two years of accredited programs are encouraged to apply. A stipend of $8,500 is offered for the 12-week period. Applications are online. Check application deadline.

  • The Washington Center Internship Program is nationally recognized for its contributions to experiential education.
  • Washington Internships for Native Students
  • Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) selects seven unpaid interns per session (spring, summer, fall). WOLA's interns are exposed to the dynamics of U.S. foreign policy-making at close range, focusing on the effects of U.S. policies on human rights, democratization and economic development in Latin America.
  • The White House Internship Program (WHIP) provides a unique opportunity for interns to observe government officials and gain practical knowledge about the daily operations of the White House. Application Deadlines: March for Summer, July for Fall, November for Spring.
