Job Title: Staff Scientist
The Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center (NUATRC) is seeking a Staff Scientist to work on NUATRC’s research grants and contracts.  The Staff Scientist will report to the Center’s Research Director, who is responsible for a research program that addresses the public health risks associated with air toxics in urban atmospheres. The program must be  consistent with the Center’s Strategic Research Plan, so as to yield the desired high-quality scientific results necessary to fulfill the Center’s mission.  (See attached Clean Air Act language)

The Leland Center is a non-profit environmental health research institution, established by the U. S. Congress and located in Houston, Texas, at the Texas Medical Center.  The Center receives Assistance Grants from the US EPA via Congressional appropriations, and from private sector sources.  The Center manages a research grant/contract program that is designed to address the personal exposures and health risks associated with current levels of air toxics in the atmosphere.  Results from the NUATRC research studies are published in the peer-reviewed literature for use in risk assessments and risk management decisions.  The applicant for this position would be expected to participate fully in the scientific program of the NUATRC. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The individual would provide stewardship on the contract and grant research being carried out under the auspices of NUATRC.  This responsibility includes timely and necessary interactions with the contractor/grantor principal investigator(s), monitoring of the scientific content of contract/grant deliverables, and providing support to the NUATRC Research Director.  This individual would also participate in the development of NUATRC Requests for Application (RFA) or Requests for Proposals (RFP), working with the Research Director and the NUATRC’s Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP).

The individual would be responsible for the development of contract/grant documents, appropriate liaison with NUATRC legal counsel, government contract/grant administration personnel, SAP members, and with the relevant offices of NUATRC contractors and grantors.  The individual would maintain records of correspondence with the NUATRC contractor/grantor to assure that contract/grant terms are met, e.g. research deliverables, payment schedules, etc.

The individual would be expected to participate in the planning, development and execution of NUATRC scientific initiatives, including workshops, symposia, etc., and where appropriate, attend and participate in internal and external scientific meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS
The individual must have an advanced degree in science or technology (e.g. M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent) and should be conversant with scientific research methodology, documentation, analyses and publication.  The individual should also have experience or have received training in the mechanisms by which contracts and grants are advertised, procured and executed, including development of RFA’s/RFP’s on behalf of the Center.  The individual is expected to be a self-starter with the ability to work effectively in a small, interactive staff setting.  He/She should also have strong computer skills, including word processing.  The individual is expected to participate in all aspects of NUATRC’s scientific program.  This full-time position requires excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills. 

The individual would become a full-time employee of The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, with commensurate employee salary/benefits.  Opportunities for adjunct faculty positions at The University of Texas School of Public Health can be explored.
