Research Mission:
The primary research mission of the Center is to contribute meaningful and relevant data to the peer-reviewed scientific literature on the potential human health effects of air toxics.  NUATRC views this mission as a fundamental component in the national regulatory effort to develop cost-effective and balanced regulations to protect the public from the potential risk from air toxics.  NUATRC believes that the participation of all segments of our society is critical to the success of this effort.  this includes federal, state and local governments, private sector representatives, and public interest organizations.  NUATRC has determined that it will be able to most effectively meet its mission by pursuing research activities not being adequately addressed by other organizations and which will contribute data relevant to the national understanding of the human health effects of air toxics.  Thus, at this time NUATRC has decided to focus on the following research areas.

    1.    non-cancer health effects, primarily those affecting the human respiratory and
           immune systems.

    2.    determination of actual human exposures to air toxics in urban environments.
