Aims

  • Assess the self-reported health of Houstonians and provide community-level estimates of health status and health care needs.

  • Support the efforts of health agencies, service providers, and community organizations to have more accurate and up-to-date health information.

  • Emphasize governmental, community and stakeholder involvement in the planning, implementation, and dissemination process.

  • Develop a reliable, efficient and flexible infrastructure for a biennial survey to track emerging health issues, assess the impact of health programs, and document health improvements in valid and fully-comparable ways.

  • Guarantee public access to survey data by providing a web-based, interactive and user-friendly interface responsive to the needs of both experienced and inexperienced users.

  • Provide specialized analyses, topical reports and training in the use of survey information.

Survey Funding

  • The 2010 Survey is funded by the Houston Endowment, a philanthropic organization founded in 1937 by Jesse and Mary Gibbs.  Their vision was to build a healthy and vibrant community through establishment and development of institutions and organizations that would nurture Houston’s people and encourage city growth.  The Houston Endowment supports the Health of Houston Initiative, composed of three projects with The University of Texas School of Public Health under the auspices of the Institute for Health Policy.  These are the Health of Houston 2010 Survey, the Mental Health Policy Analysis Collaborative, and the Houston Health Services Research Collaborative.  Read more about this initiative in Distinctions, a publication of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
