Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
The Institute for Health Policy is coordinating the effort to organize a Houston area community health survey under the guidelines of the Center for Disease Control’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). According to the CDC, BRFSS is a state-based system of health surveys that generate information about health risk behaviors, clinical preventive practices, and health care access and use primarily related to chronic diseases and injury.
Gaining this insight and information on those living in the Houston area will help in identifying emerging health problems; establishing and tracking health objectives; developing, implementing, and evaluating a broad array of disease prevention activities; and supporting health-related legislative efforts. Such efforts have been successfully implemented in El Paso and Tarrant County, Texas. The Institute for Health Policy has brought interested stakeholders and potential collaborators together with representatives from the Texas State BRFSS in order to further this goal.
