TRAINING CORE
Goal: Provide the student population from the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) with the opportunity to actively participate in state-of-the-art research related to diabetes and its complications. The ultimate goal is to motivate them to understand the biological, scientific and behavioral concepts underlying the diabetes epidemic in their community, with the expectation that in the future, they will lead the way towards strategies to control this epidemic.
Training opportunities: The training core provides the resources and environment for research training of students centered on diabetes, its causes, its complications and potential intervention.
Applicant profiles: Undergraduate, masters and doctoral students under the direct supervision of faculty participating in the P20 grant award from either UTB or UTHSH-SPH in Brownsville.
Program logistics: Two students are selected by the training committee each year, to actively participate in diabetes-related research projects. Once identified, the students interview with faculty leading the P20 cores and they select their faculty mentors based on their focus of interest. At the end of each year, all students are expected to present their experience and research findings at the border Health Seminar series. Furthermore, undergraduate students will be encouraged, and the master’s/doctoral student will be required to present their findings at another scientific activity. The students are expected to attend the weekly Hispanic Health Seminar Series, and are encouraged to attend and present at Journal Club.
The scientific environment: the Training Core provides resources for activities that stimulate scientific exchange between scientists and students from the LRGV. These include invitation of experts on diabetes and related diseases to present their findings on the weekly Border Health Seminar Series, continuation of the weekly Journal Club with student attendance and presentations.
