Sampling Frame
The study population is all fifth-grade children in selected schools
in each of the three geographic areas. The geographic areas are 14 school
districts in southwestern Los Angeles County, California; 20 school districts
near Birmingham, Alabama; and 1 school district in Houston, Texas.
Phase I
For Phase I, the pilot study, approximately 6-11 schools were selected
in each location. All fifth-grade children within each school were eligible.
Phase II
For Phase II, the full longitudinal study, approximately 30-40 schools
will be selected in each location. A total of 1,750 fifth-grade children
and their parents will be enrolled at each site for a total of 5,250 children.
