Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control

group11.pngEpidemiology is the study of patterns of disease and injury in human populations and the application of this study to the control of health problems. With its focus on disease causation and prevention, this field is a fundamental science of both preventive medicine and public health. The Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control offers strong training in the research methods and practice of epidemiology.

Three degree programs are offered by the Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control: the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology, the Master of Science (MS) in Epidemiology, the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Epidemiology. The curriculum of these degree programs are based on instruction in epidemiological principles, concepts and methods, with an emphasis on the application of this knowledge. Students are encouraged to include interdisciplinary coursework, independent research, and practical public health experiences within their academic plan.

Faculty affiliated with the Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control are based in one of six campuses:

The Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control is home to the Center for Infectious Disease and the Human Genetics Center. The Hispanic Health Research Center, based at the Brownsville regional campus, is also affiliated with this division. Several of the faculty are members of other research centers and institutes at the UT School of Public Health, including the Center for Biosecurity and Public Health Preparedness, the Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials, the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy living, and the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research, among others.
