Environmental Toxins and Reproductive Health Effects

The Texas Public Health Training Center in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human services and Texas Association of Local Health Officials present Public Health Grand Rounds titled, "Environmental Toxins and Reproductive Health Effects." The speaker this month is Dr. Deborah del Junco who will talk about her studies in 2 groups of children of parents exposed to environmental toxins: Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange and migrant health workers to pesticides along the Texas Mexico border and in Mexico. CSW Annual Awards Banquet

The Committee on the Status of Women of The UT Health Science Center at Houston will hold their annual awards banquet at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center on Wednesday, December 12, 2007. This year's recipient of the Distinguished Professional Woman Award is Carmel Bitondo Dyer, MD, FACP, AGSF, holder of the Roy M. & Phyllis Gough Huffington Chair in Gerontology and Director, Division of Geriatric Medicine and Professor of Internal Medicine at the UT Medical School at Houston.
The President's Award for Mentoring Women, for faculty, classified, and administrative and professional staff, will also be awarded. This year's Mentoring Awards go to:
- Luisa Franzini, PhD, Faculty;
- Margaret Carter McNeeds, MD, A&P; and
- LaVone Moore, Classified Staff.

Special Seminar - David L. Lakey, MD,
Commissioner, Texas Dept of State Health Services

"Forging an Enduring Partnership Between Public Health Academics and Practice." David L. Lakey, MD, serves as Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, leading one of the state’s largest agencies with a staff of 11,500 and an annual budget of $2.5 billion. As Commissioner, Dr. Lakey oversees programs such as disease prevention and bioterrorism preparedness, family and community health services, environmental and consumer safety, regulatory programs and mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment programs. Dr. Lakey became Commissioner on January 2, 2007. Prior to becoming Commissioner, Dr. Lakey served as an associate professor of medicine, chief of the Division of Clinical Infectious Disease and medical director of the Center for Pulmonary and Infectious Disease Control at the University of Texas Health Center in Tyler.

Thomas McHugh, PhD, will present “Understanding the impact of groundwater contamination on indoor air quality” The presentation will discuss a sampling program that provides an understanding of air and soil gas exchange within a building, developed in order to distinguish subsurface and other sources of VOCs in indoor air. Thomas McHugh, PhD, is a Vice President with GSI Environmental. Dr. McHugh has worked on a number of projects related to vapor intrusion including field investigations and model development.
