Public Health at the Movies
TODAY: Thursday, November 8, 2007, 6:30 pm, RAS Auditorium, ITV to Regional Campuses
The Global Health Concentration Faculty and Staff, cordially invites you to the movie presentation of "Searching for Hawa's Secret" (1999, Larry Krotz, 47mins). The AIDS epidemic is a worldwide problem that has hit Africa especially hard, with one fourth of that continent's people presently dying or dead from this modern scourge. Yet, some people seem to be immune to its danger. This program tells the story of a Canadian biochemist who searches for the key to that immunity by studying people who show such imperviousness to the disease. Hawa is a Kenyan woman who works as a prostitute to support her children. In spite of exposure to AIDS, she has not developed the disease. The program follows Dr. Frank Plummer's efforts to learn from Hawa and other women the secret of their immunity, in order to develop a preventive vaccine for AIDS.
Open to all UTHSC students, faculty and staff. Free Admission. Commentary by Dr. Sheryl McCurdy
Please note, to keep a quiet movie environment, please use the sides doors if arriving late / leaving early. Thank you for your cooperation and see you at the movies! Direct any questions or comments about the movies to Christian Gutierrez at christian.r.gutierrez@uth.tmc.edu
