Inaugural Science Teacher Symposia

Dr. Mauro Ferrari will be presenting a lecture on nanotechnology for K-16 science teachers.  Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field, which covers a vast & diverse array of devices. Dr. Ferrari will describe some of these devices including nanovectors, nanowires, & nanocantilevers which can provide essential break-throughs in the fight against cancer. Thomas Wiese, Ph.D., will present “Nuclear Receptor Specificity of the Isomers and Enantiomers of Typical Endocrine Disrupting Pesticides”  Dr. Wiese's research on endocrine disruptors has primarily focused on pesticides, industrial chemicals and compounds from plants that are components of dietary supplements (phytochemicals).  A particular interest is the different receptor mediated effects of the individual enantiomers of chiral xenobiotics.  Free lunch for first 50 attendees.  For additional information please contact Maria Arias at (713) 500-9266 maria.arias@uth.tmc.edu.

Innovations in Health Science Education Conference

An annual "Innovations in Health Science Education" conference is sponsored by the six health science campuses within The University of Texas System. The meeting is held in Austin on the first or second Thursday and Friday of October. Each meeting includes nationally-recognized invited speakers together with local participants. Although organized and sponsored by the University of Texas System, all those interested in health science education are invited to attend.

EOHS Research Seminar Series

Zhi-Dong Jiang, M.D., will present, “Host-Enteric Microbe Interaction”  The seminar will present the  methodological issues in obtaining useful epidemiologic data; the concept of injury as a disease and the relationship between the agent (mechanical energy from a blast), the human host, and its interplay with the environment; the issues related to triage, management during hospitalization, and resource utilization after a blast; and the current epidemiologic data related to morbidity and mortality. Zhi-Dong Jiang, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Center for Infectious Disease at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas

The next meeting of the Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas will take place in Austin, Texas on the morning of October 22, 2007.  The meeting will be held at the Commons Conference Center, located on the J. J. Pickle Research Campus of The University of Texas at Austin. The Task Force will update you on progress of its 2006 report: CODE RED: The Critical Condition of Health in Texas.

This Task Force public meeting will begin with registration at 8AM, and will conclude by 12:30PM, when the Task Force members will take all issues addressed into consideration and begin their deliberations on those topics raised.  More information will follow soon, but please SAVE THE DATE!!

NIH Loan Repayment Program - New Cycle Opening for 2008
The NIH Loan Repayment Program application cycle for fiscal year 2008 is currently open. The deadline for applicants to submit their online application is December 1, 2007. The NIH LRP is designed to assist individuals pursuing careers in biomedical and behavioral research. Detailed information on these programs can be found at http://www.lrp.nih.gov.
