The Texas Public Health Training Center, the City of Houston Dept of Health and Human services and the Texas Association of Local Health Officials present: "Universal Influenza Vaccination"  Presenter: W. Paul Glezen, M.D. Professor and Head Pediatric Preventive medicine section. Discussant: Salma Khuwaja, Bureau of Epidemiology, HDHHS. Dr. Glezen will discuss studies done in Texas looking at the influenza vaccine issues and make recommendations about who we should be targeting in our immunization programs. “Applications of peer-2-peer videoconferencing in a pandemic”

EOHS Research Seminar Series

John Hellsten, Ph.D., will present, “The Texas Occupational Health Surveillance System.”  This presentation will include an overview of the Texas Occupational Health Surveillance System, including a description and history of the Pesticide Exposure Surveillance in Texas (PEST) program.    Dr. Hellsten’s professional experience includes 15 years providing direct services to children in residential treatment and public schools. For the past 10 years he has been involved with HIV community planning, child fatality review, and suicide prevention as an epidemiologist at the Texas Department of Health.  He is currently working in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Surveillance division establishing policies and procedures for data collection and reporting. This seminar features practical analysis on the information needs and potential future directions of translational research in public health informatics.  Ed Hsu will discuss the lessons drawn from his empirical informatics research and instructional programs supported by both public and private sources in public health preparedness/response projects, spatial and temporal analysis of Avian Influenza trends, and health disparities research. Ed Hsu, PhD, MS, MPH is Assistant Professor of Public Health Informatics, University of Maryland new School of Public Health, College Park Campus.

Dr. Mauro Ferrari will be presenting a lecture on nanotechnology for K-16 science teachers.  Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field, which covers a vast & diverse array of devices. Dr. Ferrari will describe some of these devices including nanovectors, nanowires, & nanocantilevers which can provide essential break-throughs in the fight against cancer. Innovations in Health Science Education Conference

An annual "Innovations in Health Science Education" conference is sponsored by the six health science campuses within The University of Texas System. The meeting is held in Austin on the first or second Thursday and Friday of October. Each meeting includes nationally-recognized invited speakers together with local participants. Although organized and sponsored by the University of Texas System, all those interested in health science education are invited to attend.

This year - Themes: Communication Skills (Thursday sessions) and Education in Clinical Translational Research (Friday sessions).

Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas

The next meeting of the Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas will take place in Austin , Texas on the morning of October 22, 2007.  The meeting will be held at the Commons Conference Center , located on the J. J. Pickle Research Campus of The University of Texas at Austin .

The Task Force will update you on progress of its 2006 report: CODE RED: The Critical Condition of Health in Texas , including:
·         An update on the 80th Legislature
·         A panel discussion on Overarching Policy Considerations
·         A panel discussion on the Impact on Delivery of Care
·         A panel discussion on Next Steps: Where Do We Go from Here?

Each panel will present different perspectives on health care in Texas and offer the audience an opportunity to ask questions on these important topics. 

This Task Force public meeting will begin with registration at 8AM, and will conclude by 12:30PM, when the Task Force members will take all issues addressed into consideration and begin their deliberations on those topics raised.  More information will follow soon, but please SAVE THE DATE!!
