ASPH/NHTSA Injury Prevention, Traffic Safety PH Fellowship Program

ASPH announced two new fellowship opportunities this week at the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in Washington, D.C. The
training offered through this program will expand the injury prevention
workforce and provide fellows an opportunity to gain practical, first-hand experience working at a federal agency.
Students receiving their MPH or doctorate degree prior to the beginning of
the fellowship (no later than August 2007) and early career professionals
with an MPH or doctorate degrees may apply for the fellowship program.
Applicants must be affiliated with an ASPH-member graduate school of public
health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (a list of
ASPH-member schools can be accessed via the ASPH Web site at http://www.asph.org). The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or hold a visa
permitting permanent residence in the U.S. to be eligible for the
fellowship program.

Innovations in Health Science Education Conference

An annual "Innovations in Health Science Education" conference is sponsored by the six health science campuses within The University of Texas System. The meeting is held in Austin on the first or second Thursday and Friday of October. Each meeting includes nationally-recognized invited speakers together with local participants. Although organized and sponsored by the University of Texas System, all those interested in health science education are invited to attend.
This year - Themes: Communication Skills (Thursday sessions) and Education in Clinical Translational Research (Friday sessions).

Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas

The next meeting of the Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas will take place in Austin , Texas on the morning of October 22, 2007. The meeting will be held at the Commons Conference Center , located on the J. J. Pickle Research Campus of The University of Texas at Austin .
The Task Force will update you on progress of its 2006 report: CODE RED: The Critical Condition of Health in Texas , including:
· An update on the 80th Legislature
· A panel discussion on Overarching Policy Considerations
· A panel discussion on the Impact on Delivery of Care
· A panel discussion on Next Steps: Where Do We Go from Here?
Each panel will present different perspectives on health care in Texas and offer the audience an opportunity to ask questions on these important topics.
This Task Force public meeting will begin with registration at 8AM, and will conclude by 12:30PM, when the Task Force members will take all issues addressed into consideration and begin their deliberations on those topics raised. More information will follow soon, but please SAVE THE DATE!!
The Role of the U.S. Public Health Service in Protecting the Nation’s Health & Safety
Fall Workplace Safety Seminar Series, Mondays, Noon to 1 pm, RAS W102B
The objective of this seminar is to familiarize students with the US Public Health Service and its unique role in protecting health and safety on both a national and international level. Guest speakers will include (1) currently practicing public health professionals who started their careers in the US PHS, (2) officers currently serving in the Corps, and (3) individuals who maintain connections with the Corps through active and inactive reserve status. Ample time will be allotted for discussion so that seminar participants possibly interested in considering careers in the US PHS can learn more about the inherent opportunities, challenges, and rewards of service in this role.
