Health Protection and Health Promotion (EOHS Seminar)

Lois Tetrick, PhD, will present, “Health Protection and Health Promotion - Organizational Values”  Dr. Tetrick's presentation will address the question as to whether health protection and health promotion efforts reflect competing or complementary values of organizations and employees and whether regulatory focus theory may inform the interaction between health protection and health promotion activities from the organizational and employee perspective. Dr. Tetrick is Director of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Program at George Mason University. Radiation Safety Officer Course
Monday – Friday, June 4 – 8, 2007, 8am – 5pm, UT Operations Center Building (OCB)
Presented by the Southwest Center for Occupational & Environmental Health, the RSO Course was developed to provide the information needed for an individual to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control ionizing radiation hazards. HIGHER Visiting Professor Series

Lisa Rusell, MPH, Documentary Cinematographer will present, "Global Health Issues in Obstetric Fistula." She will also present her 15 minute video, LOVE, LABOR, LOSS and stills and video from her research in Burkina Faso and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

2007 Distinguished Professional Woman Award
Nominations due June 8, 2007
The Committee on the Status of Women invites nominations for the 2007 Distinguished Professional Woman Award. Criteria include: recipient exemplifies a professional woman; outstanding achiever in Houston, in Texas and/or the nation; made significant contributions to her profession; demonstrated a pioneering spirit; and supported women as a mentor and positive role model. Houston Health Workforce Diversity Conference

Texas has a growing shortage of workers in all areas of healthcare and the Greater Houston area is not an exception. Our vision is for an appropriately diverse, high quality health workforce in Texas.  Our ultimate goal is diversifying the health workforce to improve access and quality of care for everyone.  

On Tuesday, June 12 at the Houston Hobby Airport Marriott, the Greater Houston AHEC is host to a conference designed to explore the strategies that work to strengthen K-12 education and higher education recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups in health professions.  The conference reiterates that a comprehensive collaborative effort from all stakeholders is required to change the dynamics of healthcare workforce diversity in Texas. EOHS Research Seminar Series

NIOSH Pilot Projects Research Training Program.  Graduate students, other junior investigators in occupational health and safety and established investigators with new interests in occupational health and safety are invited annually to submit applications for short-term research projects through the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH). Support for these projects is available through a supplemental Research Training award from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to the SWCOEH.  The awardees will present their results at the last EOHS Seminar of this academic year.

2007 CDC Public Health Grand Rounds: CATCH from Research to Practice
Friday, June 15, 2007, 1:00-2:00 pm Central Time/2:00 to 3:00 pm Eastern Time
This CDC broadcast of Public Health Grand Rounds focuses on Healthy People and the importance of establishing healthy behaviors during childhood instead of attempting to change unhealthy behaviors during adulthood.  The broadcast will highlight the Coordinated School Health Program Model (CSHP) to aid schools and communities in preventing and reducing chronic diseases. This program will seek to increase knowledge and awareness of how the CATCH program helps school and communities help children improve their diet and increase the amount of physical activity they engage in, which will prevent and reduce the chronic disease burden adolescents, adults and older adults.
