State Government Fellowship Opportunity for the Institute for Health Policy
The Institute for Health Policy is offering a State Government Fellowship to an enrolled student at The University of Texas School of Public Health. A stipend of $15,000 will be given for the summer in Austin, Texas. The fellowship will begin on May 15 and last until August 15, 2008. Candidate applications must be received by March 15, 2008. Final selection is anticipated by April 15, 2008.

Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award
The Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award was established to recognize the career of a promising young public health professional or student. The award was officially established in March 1979 by Peter Drotman, MD, MPH in memory of his late brother and is presented annually by the American Public Health Association. Jay S. Drotman, MSPH, was a 27 year-old health planning consultant who was killed in a commercial airline mid-air collision in 1978. The award consists of a plaque, a $500 honorarium and one-year APHA membership, complimentary travel, lodging and registration to the APHA 136th Annual Meeting and Exposition, October 25-29, 2008 in San Diego, CA. Kristina D. Mena, MSPH, PhD, will present “Microbes in Space: An Astronaut Health Hazard?” The space shuttle environment - a semi-closed system with individuals occupying a small space - presents a scenario that has often resulted in microbial disease outbreaks in other settings. Although flight crews must have exceptional health prior to entering such an environment and the water/food on the shuttle must be of high quality, studies have shown that spaceflight alters the immune system of crew members as well as the virulence of microorganisms that may be present. Dr. Mena is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Texas School of Public Health.
