Call for Bridging and Near-miss Grant Program Applications

Student Volunteers Needed
The Office of Institutional Advancement is looking for a few student volunteers to beta test the university's campus-wide intranet (Inside UT Houston) and offer suggestions on student-related content and links. The testing will be conducted at University Center Tower (UCT) and take about 45 minutes.
The campus-wide intranet will bring together internal news, links to primary systems, highly used forms and constituent-specific resources for a more streamlined, user-friendly experience. In essence, letting end-users quickly get to the information/resources they need, when they need it!

SPHSO Valentine’s Event

Xin Ming Tu, PhD, Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. Dr. Tu is a visiting faculty candidate for the position of Director of Biostatistics at the School of Public Health. Dr. Tu will present, “A Unified Approach for Modeling Reliability with Clustered and Longitudinal Data”. In his talk, he will introduce a new class of functional response models (FRM) to unify semi-parametric regression and non-parametric models. Michael Smolensky, PhD, will present, “Shift Work and Occupational Health Outcomes”. Certain workplace tasks require the around-the-clock presence of employees and therefore shift work (SW). Approximately, 12-15% of the workforce in developed countries and up to 25% of the workforce in developing countries are involved in rotating or permanent night work. Night and SW has long been known to be a risk factor for certain social and health problems. Dr. Smolensky is Professor of Environmental Physiology in the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Prince, II, PhD will speak on “Ethical Leadership”. This presentation will describe why and how ethical breaches occur, how they can be prevented and what you can do in your current and future responsibilities to strengthen the likelihood that your employees will do the right thing and not do things that land you and your organization on the front page of your local newspaper for the wrong reasons. Dr. Prince is clinical professor and director of the Center for Ethical Leadership and holds the Loyd Hackler Endowed Chair in Ethical Leadership in the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT Austin. Kristina D. Mena, MSPH, PhD, will present “Microbes in Space: An Astronaut Health Hazard?” The space shuttle environment - a semi-closed system with individuals occupying a small space - presents a scenario that has often resulted in microbial disease outbreaks in other settings. Although flight crews must have exceptional health prior to entering such an environment and the water/food on the shuttle must be of high quality, studies have shown that spaceflight alters the immune system of crew members as well as the virulence of microorganisms that may be present. Dr. Mena is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Texas School of Public Health.
