International Training and Research

CITAR Third Annual Vietnam Workshop -  HUE 2008

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH – US

HUE CENTRAL HOSPITAL - VIETNAM

July 28 - August 1, 2008

Background and Goals

The Center for International Training and Research (CITAR) at the University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) was created to coordinate and administer advanced training in HIV public health research for international students. Our interest and involvement in Vietnam evolved from a cohort of six young health professionals who enrolled in our doctoral programs in 2004 after receiving highly selective and prestigious two-year scholarships towards doctoral degrees from the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF). The broad goals of CITAR are: To educate and train outstanding Vietnamese, and eventually other SE Asian, health professionals for public health research careers in HIV and HIV related issues in Vietnam; to help CITAR fellows secure funding for HIV research projects in Vietnam; to provide support so that CITAR graduates will be able to establish careers in HIV research in Vietnam; to foster public health research on HIV and to build public health research capacity in Vietnam; and to promote cooperative and collaborative HIV research between scientists in the United States and Vietnam.

Objectives

  • To transfer our knowledge and skills in advanced research and teaching gained from the US to postgraduate education in an academic institution in Vietnam, especially in the area of integrated HIV prevention and research;
  • To enhance our skills and experience in conducting and organizing international exchange programs, particularly in the research and teaching arena;
  • To expand our knowledge on research and teaching practices in Vietnam through learning from Vietnamese colleagues;
  • To enable public health professionals who work in HIV prevention in Vietnam to approach advanced evidence-based integrated HIV prevention and research;
  • To advance our presentation and scientific communication skills, and leadership skills.
  • To promote friendship and understanding
