Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research

CHPPR History

The Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research (CHPPR) was created in 2000 with the merging of two University of Texas School of Public Health research centers, The Center for Health Promotion Research and Development (CHPRD) and the University of Texas Prevention Research Center (TPRC). The CHPPR is a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Prevention Research Center and a World Health Organization Collaborating Center.

The CHPRD was established in 1981 as an independent, interdisciplinary unit within The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. In 1988 the CHPRD played a significant role in establishing the health promotion/health education module in the School of Public Health and at this time the CHPRD became affiliated with the SPH.

The University of Texas Prevention Research Center (TPRC) evolved from the Southwest Center for Prevention Research (SWCPR), which was established in 1986 as one of three centers in the nation for the CDC's prevention research centers program. The CDC's prevention research program aims to network academic centers, health agencies, and communities for health promotion and disease prevention research.
