Teaching Healthy Habits

The
CATCH Go For Health Series is a classroom
health education curriculum that teaches children to identify, practice
and adopt healthy eating and physical activity habits. The Go For
Health Series encourages changes in behavior that supports healthful
eating and physical activity patterns—primary risk factors
of heart disease, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and obesity.
Children learn the facts about healthy living and live the principles
of health every day.
Aligned With TEKS & TAKS
All CATCH classroom curriculum materials have been aligned with
the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills performance standards
and the Texas Assessment of Knowledge
& Skills objectives. CATCH Go For Health utilizes a variety
of educational strategies, including whole language, individual
practice, cooperative learning groups, large group discussions,
educational games, media, skill-building activities, goal setting
and reinforcement/incentives. Classroom lessons blends health topics
with performance standards of core academic subjects such as graphing,
understanding informational text, quantitative reasoning, and formulating
testable hypotheses.

The CATCH Classroom Curriculum Materials are easy
to use:
- Classroom sessions contain detailed descriptions of lesson procedures.
- Teacher preparation time is minimal.
- Lessons can stand-alone or may be used to supplement other core content
areas such as language arts, mathematics or health.
- Teaching guides contain ready-to-use, timesaving materials such as
reproducible handouts, transparency masters, and suggestions for hands-on
activities, role-playing and for providing positive reinforcement.
- Reference pages in each teaching guide provide background information
on major topics.
- Home Team activities encourage
children to apply what they have learned at school in their homes.
CATCH Go For Health Series
CATCH Go For Health is based on Social Learning Theory which targets
changes in specific environmental, personality and behavioral factors
that influence children’s health behavior. A sequential storyline
throughout the curricula revolves around a group of cartoon characters,
Hearty Heart and Friends. The characters teach
students about necessary eating, physical activity and non-tobacco use
habits which promote health.

Kindergarten Curriculum - Jump Into Health |
 |
Teacher Guide
A 10-session curriculum, which introduces children to the concepts
of "Everyday Foods" and "Sometimes Foods". Throughout
the curriculum children also learn about benefits of fruits and
vegetables, fiber, and doing more physical activity. Hands-on activities
like learning how to make healthy snacks reinforces the concepts
learned in the curriculum.

1st Grade Curriculum - Everyday Foods For Health |

Teacher Guide
A continuation from the Kindergarten Curriculum that expands knowledge
about ways to get your heart stronger, the importance of breakfast,
and reinforcing the importance of fruits and vegetables. Activities
such as learning healthy snack preparation are included.

Grade Curriculum - Celebrate Health |

Teacher Guide
A 12-Session Curriculum that educates chilren about ways to identify
hidden fats in foods, and several activities that continue teaching
the children about physical activity and healthy eating.
The children are now becoming familiar with concepts anout health
and physcial activity. Even more important, they are learning that
eating healthy foods, and being physically active is fun and enjoyable. |

Hearty Heart & Friends |

Teacher Guide
A 15-session curriculum, which targets changes in specific environmental,
personal and behavioral factors influencing children’s health
behaviors.
Student Workbook
Contains easy-to-complete, fun activities, which reinforce
healthful food selections and the benefits of physical activity.
Hearty Heart & Friends Videocassette
Nine entertaining episodes revolve around intergalactic
cartoon characters and initiate discussion and activities such as
drawings, snack preparations and word finds. |

4th Grade Curriculum-Taking Off |
 |
Teacher Guide
A 24-session curriculum, which expands upon the Hearty Heart and Friends
storyline. GO, SLOW and WHOA foods and activities are introduced along
with intergalactic cartoon reporter, Tillie Tellstar who offers advice
on how to measure fat and sodium content in foods, keep food diaries
and participate in fun food and physical activity games.
Student Workbook
Activities reinforce skills needed to select and prepare
healthful meals and snacks, guides physical activity patterns and
fosters an environment of peer support. P.A.S.T.

5th Grade Curriculum - Breaking Through Barriers |

Teacher Guide
A 16-session curriculum in which Tillie Tellstar is back to help
students overcome barriers to a healthier lifestyle. Students
are introduced to the Food Guide Pyramid, pulse taking and measuring
and problem-solving activities.
Student Workbook
Activities such as letter writing, role-playing and rap songs
to instill healthful lifestyle choices.

Curriculum Guide. An 8-session curriculum focusing on NOT using tobacco and reviews the negative consequences to using tobacco, how to resist pressures to using tobacco, and the effects of passive smoking.
