The CATCH Eat Smart Cafeteria,
A Nutrition Education Venue
The CATCH school cafeteria is literally a hands-on learning environment.
At meal time, children learn, practice and utilize healthy eating habits.
CATCH classroom and physical education lessons come to life as children
experience first hand the concepts of GO,
SLOW, and WHOA Foods.
CATCH Eat Smart will:
- Provide children with tasty meals that are lower in fat and saturated
fat.
- Maintain required levels of essential nutrients and student participation.
- Coordinate healthy nutrition messages with other areas of the school.
- Guide the entire campus towards creating a healthy school environment.
CATCH Eat Smart Materials:
The CATCH Eat Smart School Nutrition Program Guide is a versatile tool
for busy child nutrition service providers. The guide provides menu planning
and food preparation suggestions which meet the USDA required School Meal
Initiative for Healthy Children guidelines. All recipes are great tasting
and kid-tested. Suggestions are provided on how to gradually modify recipes
to lower the fat, saturated fat, and sodium. The importance of program
promotion is discussed and promotional methods are included. Criteria
for purchasing heart-healthy commodity and vendor products for reimbursable
meals, a la carte lines and school stores are outlined. And finally, nutritional
fact sheets and supplemental activities which support the CATCH Classroom
program help coordinate the cafeteria health message school-wide.

Print out the nutrient content of each day’s meal and make
it available for school faculty and administration. Compare the
nutrient content of your school foods with a restaurant food (e.g.
Pizza Hut pizza vs. school pizza). Teachers are often surprised
about the low fat content of the foods you are serving.
