"Del Valle Parent Catches the Spirit of School Health" Spring 2005 Texas Cancer News Tammy Prestwood is a parent volunteer at her 9-year-old daughter's school Popham Elementary in Del Valle ISD. She has been pleased with the implementation of the CATCH program at Popham and reports that CATCH has made a difference in the school, from more offerings of lower fat foods and "all the fruits and vegetables a student can eat," to more physical activity, which she feels helps the students concentrate better in the classroom. Tammy attends monthly meetings with school faculty to continuously provide ideas on the coordination of healthy messages throughout the school environment. "It's so easy," Prestwood said. "All I have to do is attend meetings and provide input and support. It's a worthwhile way to be involved and has allowed me to get to know the teachers and everyone at the school, which is really great for me and my child." Over the summer of 2004 32 classroom staff, PE teachers, food service staff, campus principals, district administrators and representatives from the American Cancer Society attended training on CATCH. Participants were provided instruction on how to implement the curriculum to maximize improvements in student and family health and wellness, curriculum materials and equipment. Since then, they have continued to do a great job implementing the program. Check out the song "Catch Your Dreams" created by Steve and Mary Beth Denton. Del Valle personnel enjoy the Eat Smart Rhapsody, a group activity promoting the 4 "P"'s of Eat Smart --planning, purchasing, preparation and promotion.
Del Valle teachers warm up for activity by "gluing and stretching", a warm-up game.
