The Doctorate of Philosophy Degree Program – Ph.D.
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Epidemiology at the Brownsville Campus will develop students into proficient and able scholars through understandings, application and practice of epidemiological principles, methodologies, research and theories. Working and living along the US/Mexico border, doctoral students will experience firsthand international research of pandemic and emerging local diseases. Students will also be exposed to variety of other health and behavioral related issues and concerns common in minority, low income, rural and indigent communities.
Primary epidemiological research at the Brownsville Campus focuses on:
- Tuberculosis
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- HIV/AIDS research
Students will complete a minimum of 12 courses which will total or exceed 36 semester credit hours (s.c.h.). Of these 36 s.c.h., no more than 6 hours of dissertation research will count toward the required graduation minimum. The Ph.D. program is generally a three year program and is composed of four curriculum content areas and requires two minor areas of study.

Application and Admissions Requirements
- The preferred applicant will have an earned master’s degree in public health, epidemiology or a related field.
- At least two letters of Recommendation.
- Scores of 1200 or above on the Graduate Record Exam.
- Submission of a writing sample that demonstrates competence in written communication for academic work. Theses, publications or other academic work are preferred.The applicant should be the sole or first author on submitted work.
