The Brownsville Experience
The Brownsville Experience offers students a very intimate 2:1 student to instructor ratio. Students will be able to become involved in realistic community interactions through academic research in immediate public health concerns such as obesity, diabetes, tuberculosis, hepatitis A, environmental and pollution management, women and maternal health care and cancer research. These realistic community interactions also give our students the hands-on experiences of working within a Latino culture and community, America's fastest growing minority population. Here in the Lower Rio Grande Valley our students can be exposed to day-to-day environmental, medical and communal issues which are found in developing countries and populations while at the same time being able to engage in solid and realistic scientific research and solutions available through 21st century technologies and resources through the Health Science Center at Houston.
With the proximity of the Brownsville Regional Campus to Matamoros, Mexico and the Mexican State of Tamaulipas, students can experience pure and unique economic, cultural and communal paradigms that are rarely experienced anywhere in the United States, while at the same time living "On the Border by the Sea" in Brownsville, Texas and studying through The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
In addition to the unique educational, cultural and research opportunities, Brownsville Regional Campus students will be able to enjoy personal rewards in an area of South Texas rarely seen in the national spotlight. Brownsville, Texas hosts three international bridges linking the United States to Matamoros Mexico. The vacation resort South Padre Island is an easy 30-minute drive east, linking you to the Padre Island National Sea Shore which extends to Corpus Christi. This sub-tropical climate maintains an average temperature of around 90 degrees in the summer months and a comfortable 50 degrees throughout the winter months. In addition to the vast landscape and climate, the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas also offers one of the lowest cost of living indices in the entire United States.
