Dietetic Internship Program
Dear Interested Future Dietetic Intern:
As you know, matching with a Dietetic Internship has become very competitive. Many of you have downloaded our application materials to review the requirements and that is a great start to the process of potential admission to the Dietetic Internship.
For those who have not, here is the link: http://www.sph.uth.tmc.edu/DellHealthyLiving/diet/default.aspx?id=3994
I would suggest some further activities as you develop your strategy for future Dietetic Internship (DI) admission:
- Get familiar with our website, especially the different Divisions of study (http://www.sph.uth.tmc.edu/academics/ ). You must first be accepted to the School of Public Health in one of the academic divisions before you can apply to our DI. The application deadline is December 14 using www.SOPHAS.org.
- Under each Division, click on the Research link to read about the projects that faculty members in that Division are involved in. If you decide to come to the School of Public Health, you will have the opportunity to complete a Culminating Experience (Thesis) which will more than likely involve one of the projects you read about. So, see what excites you !
- Get some volunteer or work experience in an area of Dietetics Practice (Foodservice, Research, Community Health, Education, Clinical Dietetics, etc.). If you cannot find a paid position, try volunteering for WIC, Meals on Wheels, hospitals, Public Health Dept., etc. The Admissions Committee for the Dietetic Internship ranks your application on the paid / unpaid hours in each of these areas.
- Start reviewing for your GRE. It is never too early to do this. The graduate school suggests a minimum score of 1,000 on your GRE.
- Plan to attend our Open House in the Fall. We will let you know as soon as the date is scheduled but it will be a Friday in September or October most likely on the same weekend as other open house events for DIs in the Houston area. At this event you will hear from the DI faculty, present and past interns, as well as a representative from the School of Public Health Student Affairs Admissions Committee.
- Please send me your email address so you can be added to our distribution list.
Let me know if you have any questions!
