Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in America, endangering our children’s health. The risks are great – including an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease as an adult. Ensuring that our kids get the proper amount of physical activity in their day can help combat this worrying trend and you have the opportunity to help us do something about it.
I’m asking you to take part in the American Heart Association’s Sneakers for FIT Kids Photo Petition in support of the Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (FIT Kids Act).
The FIT Kids Act seeks to reduce the current childhood obesity problem by encouraging public schools to provide increased, quality physical education and promote healthy lifestyles. In a week’s time, hundreds of your fellow advocates will be descending on Washington, D.C. for our You’re the Cure on the Hill lobby day. All of them will be pounding the pavement and urging Congress to pass this important legislation.
I am asking you to stand, walk, and run with us! Our goal is to demonstrate the widespread support for FIT Kids to Congress and help advance the legislation that can help our kids have a brighter, healthier future. Hundreds of Americans have already put their best foot forward for physical education for our kids. Will you lace up those sneakers and do the same?
Participation is as easy as 1-2-3. Simply:
1) Take A Picture Of Your Well-used, Stinky Sneakers – It doesn’t matter whether they are high tops, tennis shoes or cross trainers! Just snap a photo of your sneakers, or of you being active in your sneakers. And get creative- create a sign expressing your support to include in the shot!
2) Send Your Picture to Sneakers4FITKids@yahoo.com – We will add your sneaker picture to our Sneakers for FIT Kids Photo Petition, representing another American stepping-up for FIT Kids.
3) Wear Your Sneakers April 29th – Even if you cannot join us for “You’re the Cure on the Hill” in person, be sure to wear your sneakers on this day to raise awareness of the issue and show your solidarity with our cause. And spread the word- don’t forget to invite family, friends, and co-workers to join you too!
With your support we can make the FIT Kids Act a “shoe-in” for passage. So be sure to take part today, and help ensure we are raising a generation of active, happy kids for a heart-healthy future.
