SGMA APPLAUDS ANNOUNCEMENT OF $75.5 MILLION IN PEP GRANTS IN '08
Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association announces that $75.655 million in Physical Education Program grants will be awarded this calendar year (2008).

Champions for Healthy Kids Grants
A partnership of the General Mills Foundation, the American Dietetic Association Foundation and the President’s Challenge. Fifty grants of $10,000 each will be made to schools, community groups and other non-profit organizations with innovative programs aimed at improving the nutrition and activity habits of young people. The involvement of a registered dietitian or dietetics technician, registered is a requirement for each program.

The CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health and Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity announce the release of Body Mass Index Measurement in Schools in the Journal of School Health.
School-based body mass index (BMI) measurement has attracted much attention across the nation from esearchers, school officials, and legislators as a potential approach to address obesity among youth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention produced Body Mass Index Measurement in Schools to describe the purpose of school-based BMI surveillance and screening programs. The article examines current practices, identifies concerns surrounding programs, and outlines needs for future research. Guidance is provided on specific safeguards that need to be addressed before schools decide to collect BMI information.

The 2008 Annual Grants Program will emphasize programs or projects that have a significant impact on furthering the Foundation's mission to enhance, assist and grow the sport of soccer in the U.S. A preference will be given to those projects or programs in economically disadvantaged urban areas encompassing populations of 50,000 or more.

Nickelodeon's Let's Just Play Giveaway Sweepstakes
Nickelodeon has committed an additional $300,000 in awards to the Let's Just Play Giveaway for October through December 2007.
Let's Just Play Giveaway Sweepstakes is a unique grant-giving program that empowers kids to partner with adults for a chance to win $5,000 awards to support fitness, recreation and nutrition programs at their schools and community-based organization. Kids between the ages of six and 15 nominate their school or community-based organization by explaining why they need more resources.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is hosting the first-ever Junk-Free Schools Video Contest. We need the help of young filmmakers to make the case for getting junk-food out of schools as part of a nationwide campaign to bring healthier foods to schools.
